Week 2

It doesn’t stop!

Weeks 2 did not disappoint. Of course the blockbuster everybody was waiting for, the Premier League decider (yes we’re only 2 weeks in but let’s be honest, who else can out-perform these 2?). However, there were another 10 league games on but let’s just recap a couple.

Aston Villa v Manchester United

Villa Park is probably one of the toughest sports ground to go because of its crowd, and when Villa do get on the ball they can be pretty dangerous and it this rate against a very sub-standard Manchester United team, anything is possible.
Let’s be honest i think majority of football fans have kind of forgotten of the United ‘Wonderkid Adnan Januzaj, yet he repayed Van Gaal’s faith in starting Januzaj, and he does what he should probably be doing week in week out, playing with great composure and getting his name of the scoresheet.  Now, the drama with De Gea continues, Romero got the nod again ahead of De Gea still not being ‘mentally ready’ (ummm?) In saying this, Romero had a very quiet afternoon at Villa park, securing his second league clean sheet in a row.
Now, the 1-0 result for the Red Devils was somewhat more than they really merited, Villa as always showed a lot more promise in the second half almost drawing the gamelevel. Ayew fired a shot high and far, Amavi showed his pace as he bolted down the right wing crossing in a peach of a cross yet, no one was there to poke the ball home. (oh, right Benteke….)
Villa were lucky that Depay didn’t end up putting the game to bed as a peach of a pass my Juan Mata left the Villa back 4 asking “what?” but only didn’t convert so his hunt for his first EPL goal continues….
Villa still had new man Traore watching from the stands. So hopefully he is the man to put this Villa side together.

Westham United v Leicester

The gentleman has returned to the Premier League, Mr Claudio Raineri who in just 2 weeks has changed the face of Leicester City. Now, last season Leicester were not all to bad either finishing 14th and the hammers 12th. But this new Leicester side are one to be reckoned with.
The Hammers were quickly brought down to earth after their fantastic win over the gunners at the emirates.
Boy of the moment Riyad Mahrez now with 3 goals in 2 premier league matches has given this Leicester side something and then some. Japan newby Okazaki also on the scoresheet assisted by Vardy put the Foxes up at 28′. Mahrez, Okazaki, Vardy. These 3 look the real deal and if their form continues, who knows what we can expect this season from them.
Even though, the Hammers did pull one back by a debut goal from Payet, but Bilic’s men did not turn up. The cherry on the cake was when Adrian was shown straight red after coming up for a stoppage time corner, which went wrong. As he tried to put the ball back in the box he went ‘A la De Jong to Xabi Alonso’ straight in the chest…no complaints there ‘Red’.
Odd afternoon for the Hammers who really have to pick up the pace if they want to finish higher than they did because the Foxes look the real deal and I don’t see them dropping off the pace as yet with Raineri giving them so much and they are returning the favour.

Crystal Palace v Arsenal

Palace under Pardew look rejuvenated, playing very well and have recruited smartly. Cabaye, Lee, Macarthy, Mutch and so on. Now, the result did not play in Palaces’ favour, they ended up losing 2-1., goals by Cazorla and Giroud and for Palace Murrary struck the ball home to give Palace a glimmer of hope for a comeback, The secondhalf however, was anything but like the 1st (thank goodness). Chances flew! As Murray scored 4mins from time, imagine the Palace crowd! ROWDY! Now Murrary almost salvaged a point with his glancing header but….it didn’t go in.
Now despite all the drama, Wenger can hold his head up high, coming off that defeat against the hammers. The gunners look very good and their players are on song. Cazorla, Giroud, Ozil and now Sanchez back from his Copa America campaign we can all rejoice and this this gunners side can maybe (maybe) shake this premier league dog race of two.
Palace on the other hand, didn’t look very bad either, they did have their chances but lets face it, Ospina was rarely troubled….

Manchester City v Chelsea

The game of the weekend! 2 title contenders who look like no one can catch them (well at least City does) and what better to have this game played week 2 of the Premier League to make this title chase even juicer, these 2 will meet in April.
The scoreline really does speak for itself. City winners 3-0. Possession, overlapping runs by the RB’s, LB’s and the wingers, one-twos, shots this City team are looking better than they ever have. Making us put their below par season last year to rest. When you have a starting XI like city does, Hart, Kolarov, Kompany, Mangala, Sagna, Navas, Toure, Fernandinho, Silva, Sterling and Aguero, there is no one who can really stop them. Hart was rarely troubled, City controlled the game in its entirety, the midfield, Toure, Silva and Fernandinho gave Chelsea everything. Now cue the complaints of Chelsea, yes a Ramiers goal was wrongly ruled offside but hey, it was the linesman call and no one else’s.  From there City didn’t stop. Begovic had a very busy day, saving 3 previous Aguero shots after finally, Aguero was on the scorehseet. So a typical one-two by Aguero and Silva. Aguero (i wound’t say easily) dribbled his way past 4 Chelsea defenders after a fully composed left foot shot finally past Begovic and City were ahead. Chelsea had the fair share of possession and ‘chances’, a Fabregas 20 yarder saved by hart, Matic header at the near post went over the bar and…..yep.
City on the otherhand continued their dominance and doubled their lead with a captain-esque header. Kompany scoring his second goal in 2 games in great fashion. Now, it didn’t stop there, the hardworking Fernandinho ensured City the game almost at the death, with a fantastic low volley just outside the post, Begovic had now chance. A half chance created by a city counterattack that went kind of wrong, but Silva at it again got the ball back with a fortuitous deflection which placed the ball in the feet of Fernandinho where he did the rest.
Mourinho was really outplayed in this fixture. Chelsea don’t look that good  or don’t look the same side like last year, pretty much invincable. They need to rapidly find their form because yes we can say we are only 2 weeks into the premier league but thats exactly the point! The title race starts now and that is why they call it the best league in the world, to win the title you must win matches being now and not later but hey who knows!
It lived up to its hype this game and Pellegrini’s men have one over Mourinho and let’s face it, it feels good doesn’t it!
On to the next one.

Liverpool v Bournemouth

I have not yet blogged about Liverpool who are looking good. Yes they have lossed Gerrard who lets be honest last season wasn’t really going for him. He looked slow, and not up to the paces. but Liverpool didn’t either. It was a season to forget, and they have compensated with new signings. Firmino, Bogdan, Benteke, Clyne, Gomez, Ings, Milner. Solid signings to give Liverpool breather fresh air, But the biggest lost of all was of course money man, Raheem Sterling who looks a peach at his new club.
Liverpool against new boys Bournemouth. Bournemouth began the game like a newly promoted team would. Give everything and then some more. And boy did they! For 2o minutes or so Bournemouth were literally all of the Reds, giving them nothing and how they didn’t score is beyond all of us.
Liverpool did slowly (slowly) bring themselves back into the game and lucky enough to be level but if they were up against a top flight team, goodnight to’ya! Surprisingly Llana got the nod ahead of Ibe who looks the part and in my opinion better than Llalana, but hey Rodgers knows…
Coutinho looks again like the player for Liverpool this season, and I don’t think he can do it all on his own. If now Liverpool do switch on and play collectively who knows with team, a striker who scores, midfield who creates, defence who do their job, anything can happen. All nice said but can it be done, we will have to wait and see.
Bournemouth can leave with their head held high, You don’t just go to Anfield, opening day of the season and simply outplay them. Unlucky they left empty handed but thats the tough life of the epl boys!

5 more games…

Southampton v Everton. Everton ran out winners 3-0 away with a superbub game by Roberto Martinez’s men. Controlled the game, scored when they had their chances, and finally it’s the Everton we are used to seeing.
Swansea v Newcastle  Swansea just continue their fantastic start to the season. 2-0 win against a very bad Newcastle side who look deflated. Ayew and Gomis again on the scoresheet, Shelvey and Sigurdson on fire, defence strong so in the end what is stopping Gary Monk’s side this season?
Sunderland v Norwich Sunderland want to put their horrendous and nervewrecking previous season behind them. And how could they when they are looking very, very shaky. At home a reception not too warm and against a Norwich side who look promising beats them 1-3. The fans are mad, the coach speechless and the players….when do you want to turn up boys?
Tottenham v Stoke If one was to judge this game by its first half only and not watch the second. Tottenham were the deserved winners. But against Stoke…yeah no. Stoke have recruited well in young talents and it will only take some time for the players to fully jell and when they will I don’t think teams want to play in a ‘rainy night at Stoke’. The game did finish 2-2 with a Stoke City fight back.
Watford v WBA Welcome to the Premier League Watford! This game did finish 0-0 and still the start for WBA looks not very promising. Watford, yes, fough draw but hey they will take a point at this stage and push on from here!
go boys!!
